Gas cloud tracking system – Second Sight TC - Bertin Instruments
This gas cloud tracking system, based on infrared technology, provides an innovative solution for industrial safety.
Second Sight TC is an infrared gas imaging camera that detects the presence of gas clouds at a distance of up to several hundred meters. This instrument makes visible emissions that may otherwise be invisible to the naked eye. In the event of a toxic or explosive gas leak, the gas cloud is automatically detected, depicted as an overlay on the infrared image and monitored in real time.
This innovative solution for industrial safety provides key information directly to the central control room with a real-time visual representation of the gas cloud and its motion. The network of multiple cameras enables the tracking of the gas cloud in the industrial area. It can also be deployed temporarily to enhance the efficiency of leak detection, as well as protecting critical infrastructure or workers. Bertin shares its expertise at each stage of the design process.

The Second Sight TC infrared gas imaging camera is suitable for both one-off short-term monitoring and long-term monitoring, depending on the task and purpose:
Each gas has its own absorption spectrum and presents typical absorption peaks in infra-red bands II (3 to 5 µm MWIR) and bands III (8 to 14 µm LWIR). Second Sight operates in band III, in order to use the particular peaks to enable the identification of the vast majority of gases. The Second Sight measurement principle uses the scene background as an infra-red source, and image processing algorithms to highlight the presence of a gas cloud in line of sight.
In the event of an alarm, the presence of a gas cloud is displayed as an overlay on the infrared image. The identification and estimated path length concentration are given in the top left corner and the gas is underlined in red in the gas list.
The latest version of Second Sight is becoming a universal gas detector with its new detection algorithm Gas X, an unknown gas detection capability that enables the detection of any gas cloud modifying the infrared signature in band III of the observed scene, even if the gas is not listed in the system’s database.
Battery
Lightweight and compact battery designed with Lithium-ion technology to offer 5.5 hours of autonomy.
GPS option
The GPS coordinates of the Second Sight is given in the Graphic User Interface. It highlights the area of surveillance on a map. Integrated with a compass, it also gives the direction of the Second Sight when used with Pan&Tilt.
IECEx Cabinet
Second Sight is integrated into a pressurized stainless steel enclosure for installation in an area where an explosive mixture is not likely to occur under normal operating conditions (zone 2). While a shelter protects the system from direct sunlight, its temperature is regulated by Vortex.
Supervision software
This software manages every aspect of Second Sight in a chemical plant (multiple sites are possible). This software checks the various states of Second Sight (alarm, default and power cut off), presents the state of the system on the screen and displays the alarm video if a gas is detected.
The only standoff gas detector for real time surveillance and with source localization.
It’s the perfect solution for critical area surveillance and protection against chemical threats. Stéphane Senac, Bertin Instruments Research and Development director, here presents a trial with Total on Methane and how the Second Sight technology was used for the supervision of industrial sites.
