Control and detection of nuclear and other radioactive materials has become a growing concern since the first seizures in the early 1990s. Each state has the responsibility for combating illicit trafficking and the inadvertent movements of radioactive materials. SNM (Special Nuclear Material) portal Monitors are therefore installed in strategic locations such as air terminals, ports, nuclear facilities and critical buildings.
To meet this need, Bertin Technologies has developed, in cooperation with the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), a system capable of detecting these radioactive sources (Gamma and Neutrons) without using 3He gas. This technology is based on plastic scintillators coupled with photomultipliers.
